Life Insurance Consulting in Neptune City

Most people buy life insurance once and never look at it again. We sit down with you, figure out what your family would actually need, check what you already own and lay out the choices in plain words. Then you decide.

What life insurance consulting is

Life insurance has one job: replace money your family would lose if you died. The hard part is knowing how much, for how long and what kind. We help you answer those three questions before you sign anything.

We are licensed to sell life insurance, so we can place a policy if you need one. We will also tell you plainly when the coverage you have through work or an old policy already does the job. Sometimes the best answer is to keep what you have.

Our approach comes from training as a credentialed holistic financial coach through Columbia University. In practice that means insurance gets looked at next to your savings, debts, retirement and the people who depend on you, not on its own.

What we go over with you

A needs figure you can trace
We total the mortgage, debts, the years of income your family would need, college costs and final expenses. Then we take away savings and coverage you already hold. Every line is shown, so the figure adds up.
A look at the policies you have
Bring your policy documents and your benefits summary from work. We check the death benefit, beneficiaries, premiums and when any term coverage ends.
Term and permanent, side by side
Term lasts a set number of years and costs less. Permanent coverage such as whole life builds cash value and costs more. We go through which suits your goals and which does not.
An honest look at cash value policies
Some policies link cash value to investments. With our Series 7 license, we can explain how that investment piece works, what the fees do and how it stacks up against investing on your own.
Checking beneficiaries and ownership
A former spouse still named, or a child never added, comes up more than you might expect. We make sure the right people are listed and that the policy ownership fits your situation.

When to take another look at your coverage

  • Your family looks different now

A marriage, a divorce, a new baby or a child starting college all shift what your family would need. Old coverage seldom keeps pace by itself.

  • Work is your only source of coverage

Group life insurance is often one or two years of pay. It typically stops when the job does.

  • Your term policy ends soon

Once a level term period ends, renewal rates can rise steeply. Planning a few years ahead helps.

  • You don't know what your policy does

If you can't explain what the policy covers or why you bought it, look at it again before paying another premium.

  • You run a business

Partners, key employees and business loans may all rely on one person. Coverage can help keep both the business and your family on solid ground.

What affects the cost of coverage

Premiums are set by the insurance company, not by us. What you pay depends mostly on you and the policy you pick. We go over these factors so the quotes you see make sense.

Age and health

Younger, healthier people pay less. Underwriting may include a health questionnaire, records and sometimes a short exam.

Death benefit and term length

The bigger the payout and the more years it covers, the higher the premium. Matching both to a real need keeps you from paying for coverage you will never use.

Type of policy

Permanent coverage costs much more than term for the same death benefit because part of the premium builds cash value.

Tobacco and lifestyle

Smoking and some activities raise rates. Quitting can lower them later, and we can show you when to ask.

How the work goes

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

We start with a conversation at our office or by phone or video. You tell us about your family, your hopes and what worries you. We explain how we work and how we are paid.

  2. 2

    Pull together your papers

We ask for your current policies, work benefits and a general sense of your debts and savings. It doesn't have to be complete.

  3. 3

    Your needs and choices

We show you the needs figure, how your current coverage compares and two or three options if something is missing. We explain the trade-offs of each one.

  4. 4

    Apply only when it fits

If you decide on new coverage, we take care of the application and explain the medical underwriting. After that, we check in as your life changes.

Questions people ask about life insurance

How much coverage do I actually need?

No one rule works for everybody. We figure the amount from your real debts, income, your children's ages and your savings. Many people learn they need more than their coverage through work, and some learn they need less than someone sold them.

Is this just a way to sell me a policy?

No. We can place a policy when you need one, and we tell you that at the start, along with how we get paid. If what you have is enough, we will say so and you keep it.

Should I drop my whole life policy and switch to term?

Not before a close look. Canceling can cost you cash value, bring surrender charges or mean higher rates now that you are older. We compare both choices with real numbers before you decide.

Do I need to come to the office?

No. You can meet us at our Neptune City office or by phone and video. Many clients from Belmar, Wall and nearby towns don't meet in person until they choose to.

How does life insurance connect to the rest of my money?

Coverage often ties into legacy planning and retirement planning. If we already handle your financial planning, the coverage review becomes part of that plan.
